Hello,

I am a newbie to the site, something you may have already gathered from the subject line, I along with the wife (the boss) have recently moved into the area  france  and live just outside Le Dorat.
I will no doubt be popping up on the site from time to time to ask "where can we find this or that" or "how do you do such and such" as you will have a vastly superior knowledge of such things to us (which won't be difficult)

so for the time being, all the best
Stuart

news Census Time in France
Posted by: Fred - Wed-07-01-2015, 18:08 PM - Replies (3)

It's census time so you will soon be getting a knock on your door.

It starts on 15 Jan and an agent recruited by your Mayor will be bringing the census to you, make sure you know who they are or ask to see their card.

You can do it yourself either on the papers they will give you or on-line.

But I get them to do it for me, when they turn up just tell them you don't understand enough and they will fill in the answers for you and all you have to do is sign it.

The agent that came last time to us was being driven around by on of the Mayors staff, and he knew all about us and the house so it was simple and painless.

Bois de Chauffage - supplier recommendation
Posted by: Brian - Mon-10-11-2014, 12:44 PM - Replies (3)

Further to my earlier plea to find a good supplier of wood, I have now found one.
Hi name is Jirka Habi and he is based near Adriers. He can be found by searching for bois de chauffage, Adriers in LeBonCoin.

His wood is a mixture of oak and ash, 2 years old and priced at €45/stére. I was most surprised that he also stacked the wood at no additional cost.
He also supplies kindling at the same price.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post his phone number or email here: Fred, advice please!

Brian

  Cattery or cat feeder/sitter
Posted by: Brian - Wed-29-10-2014, 15:13 PM - Replies (7)

Hello and welcome to the latest in my seemingly endless chain of questions Blush

My wife and I are planning to return to see family in the UK at Christmas for just over a week.

All fine apart from the fact that we have two cats over here that need either to be fed or banished to a cattery for the duration.

Andrea has found one cattery but the space available for the cats is very small - she reckons the two of them would be sharing a space about the size of a small fridge - and it's a fair drive away from base. So that's not going to happen Confused

Does anyone:
a) know of a good cattery within (say) an hour of Montmorillon
or
b) know of someone who'd be prepared to pop over to our place near Adriers once a day or every other day to leave them some food. In return for suitable payment, of course Wink

Thanks in advance for any help. Or even sarcastic replies...
Brian

  Christmas markets near Montmorillon
Posted by: Brian - Mon-27-10-2014, 12:33 PM - Replies (5)

Hello all.

This is our first proper Christmas here in France.
Do any of the towns within 20-30km of Montmorillon have Christmas markets? I've scoured the papers etc but can't find any references. Our fantastically helpful French neighbours have rather thoughtlessly gone away for a few weeks so I cant ask them!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or recommendations,
Brian

Email Scam Warning!

If you get an email that looks like it has come from SFR with the heading ATTENTION!! Dump it as it's a scam.

It looks like this, and BE WARNED the whole page is a live link so be careful with your mouse.

These are getting very common especially if you have an Orange Email account, there has been bank ones and social security ones, so be very careful.

My tip is to get a free Gmail account for dealing with companies in France, and another for personal use. You can have as many Gmail accounts as you wish, then just leave your Orange for stuff from Orange. Wink

  Car registration in Montmorillon
Posted by: Brian - Mon-13-10-2014, 07:22 AM - Replies (9)

Apologies if this has been covered before. I did go through the forum but couldn't find an answer.

I've just bought a used car and need to register it. I know the process in outline and where to do it. The vendor said that the fee has to be paid by cheque and cash is not acceptable. The problem is that I do not have a cheque book. Does anyone know if the fee can be paid by debit or credit card?

Re-directing mail from France to UK
Posted by: Admiral - Sat-04-10-2014, 12:20 PM - Replies (6)

Now this is a big ask but.............does anyone know if La Poste offer a service re-directing your French mail to a UK address?

If they do, how does it work?

How much does it cost?

Before anyone asks, I'm not talking about sending an LRAR from outside France because that topic has already been cracked by the long-lamented Steve.

  Translation in Montmorillon
Posted by: Rosie - Tue-23-09-2014, 01:56 AM - Replies (4)

We are having ongoing, intermittent, problems with our internet (freebox.fr)
Connects via wifi and runs quite well sometimes, others either won't connect at all or shows as connected to router (wifi) but no internet connection
When it does connect sometimes runs very well (19mbs) other time really slow
We connect just wirelessly at the moment (iPhones/pads) until I can find my Ethernet adaptor for the MacBook (which of course I can't find, and can't seem to buy locally)
Would anybody out there, who's French language and patience, is up to dealing with the ISP help desk, like a job for a day or half day (whatever it takes) trying to help me sort this out. (I'll pay well to get this sorted, I can usually sort of thing in English, however my French is just not up to having the arguments, that no doubt will be a part of the "assistance" one is usually offered by ISP help desks, when they try to fob you off when they don't know how to fix the problem!
PM me if you think you might be up for the challenge!

Car air conditioning Montmorillon or near by.
Posted by: Fred - Tue-09-09-2014, 10:40 AM - Replies (14)

Does anyone know of a Car air conditioning specialist. (Not an all-round garage, an actual specialist in air con for cars) ?

Always had good service from Norauto in Montmorillon see other thread Puncture repair in Montmorillon but now I've had a bad experience with them. Angry

We decided to get our air conditioning checked and serviced as it's not a diy job, and as Norauto had an offer on we thought that'll do as they have done other work for us and been ok.

Took it in and an hour later drove off with nice fresh cool air, two days later we had to go to Potiers and on the way back the air conditioning although set to 18.5 started blowing out Hot Air. By the time we got home it was warmer inside than outside. Cool

I went back to Norauto, and they asked me to bring it back when the technician would be there. I went back and they did the whole service again and it worked fine ............................. that is till I got home and it was blowing hot again. Angry

Went back again and was asked to take it Saturday morning when the boss mechanic will be there. As I had a couple of days to wait I decided to ask around on the internet and via email with someone I knew in the UK , I was told by a very reliable source that my particular model needed 650 Grms of gas but my invoice from Norauto said they had added 1050 Grms!

On the Saturday I took an email from my reliable source to Norauto and they agreed "They had indeed put in to much gas" They drained it and refilled to the right amount and off I went in my nice cool car.

Gets home and yep you guessed it, it's blowing out hot air. My reliable source told me they may have damaged the air con as it was way over pressure, so I went straigt back this time Not Happy They drained it filled it, gave me back my money and suggested I go to an Air conditioning specialist and get a full report before they can take the matter any further.

I asked them to recommend one and they wouldn't, but it has to be a specialist. Oh and I have to pick up the bill too even though I'm driving around in a car with no air con. Angry

So if anyone does know of a car air con specialist near to Montmorillon please let me know.

*And if you are thinking of having your air con serviced I would give Norauto a miss as they obviously don't know what they are doing where a specialist job is concerned. Angry
