A new ruling by the European Court of Justice means that France is liable to refund Brits who have sold their property in the past couple of years.
Quote:
President François Hollande in 2012 imposed a 15.5 per cent "social charge" on capital gains from the sale of second homes or rental income, tax on rental income rose overnight from 20 per cent to 35.5 per cent, while capital gains tax on property sales rose from 19 per cent to 34.5 per cent.
In its February 26 ruling, the Court of Justice concluded that the tax violates EU law because a resident of a member state must contribute to the social security system of one member state only.
It is thus illegal under EU law for France to levy social charges on income and gains derived by non-French EU residents on selling or renting their French property.
Graeme Perry, a London-based French tax law expert, said the ruling was "good news for the many EU residents who have been forced to pay this charge". He advised anyone who has not already submitted a claim to the French tax authorities to do so now.
The chances of being reimbursed are "very, very strong" for anyone who sold their second home in 2014, he said. "If you have already made a claim, you should now write to the French tax administration asking for your money back and also asking for a refund of any tax agent's fees."
To limit the damage, the French recently imposed stricter deadlines on submitting reimbursement claims. These prevent anyone who sold in 2012 or 2013 from making a claim unless they did so by December 31 of the year following that sale. These deadlines, however, "may be open to legal challenge", said Mr Perry.
Probably the wrong bit to post in - feel free to move it!
I read yesterday about a recent shakeup in the French mobile telephone contract market = well about blooming time!!!! i read here that the French mobile phone operator "Free" had a 2 Euro a month contract offering what seems to me to be a wealth of goodies for us:
Their low-cost offer is €2 a month, for which you get 2 hours of free calls, including to fixed lines in 100 international destinations, as well as mobile phones in France, USA and Canada. It also includes unlimited SMS messages. Access to the internet is limited 50Mb a month.
So does anyone have any experience of the Free company and/or this particular contract?
My wife, Sharon, & I completed on our house purchase in Nerignac back in December.
For now this is a maison secondaire, habitable but no heating, and with potential to expand into the haylofts upstairs.
Over the next few years we'll firstly just enjoy the location & get to know the neighbours, and secondly do the building work the house deserves (a very English outlook I know). The overall intention being to end our days in France, lazily, supping vin rouge in a location & house that we've made our own.
A dream of many I'm sure, just working towards the reality !!
Now wasting my lunch hour on the web & preparing to jump in the car for a Friday night crossing to Caen. Managed to stumble across this forum looking for a potential carpenter - have a photo of Sebastien Cousin's sign board on our neighbours driveway, and it brought me here.
And all this in response to my Sister & B-in-L who upped sticks & moved to Luchapt permanently last summer, bringing both of our retired mothers with them
They seem to be enjoying it, and I've suggested they sign up to this forum.
Goodbye for now, here's hoping local knowledge can assist in the future.

A story with a happy ending. One of our cats developed a problem with his back leg during Saturday.
Conquering my fear of making phone calls in French, I rang three local practices and received a "we're closed" answerphone message. Two if them did go on to give an emergency number but when I called those they weren't answered.
However, within 5 minutes I received a call back from the vet in Montmorillon (the one in Rue Terrier Blanc, which I always think is a great address for a vet!)
He went to his surgery and we met him there about 20 minutes. A quick examination later the cat was diagnosed with a pulled muscle: "he jumped and landed badly" according to the vet!
An anti-inflammatory injection and pain killer plus a week's worth of medicine were dispensed and we left the surgery with a happier cat
So if any of you have pet problems out of office hours, give the Montmorillon surgery a call. I know we're not allowed to recommend vets on a public forum but if any of you would like clearer contact details please drop me a pm.
Blimey, I leave the country for a couple of months only to find family GPs up in and arms and some of them refusing to accept the Carte Vitale.
What is this all about?
I'm told they're protesting over "proposed" reforms in the health service. What are these reforms? Surely they can't be going down the bankrupt NHS route. Or can they?
Honestly. I can't leave this country for a minute without everything going to the dogs.
All useful replies on the back of a 50€ note please as this will help me pay future bills.

The new French smoke detector law comes into play on 8 March 2015
The owner of the house has to supply the detector.
You must perform regular checks to ensure it's working.
They must conform to NF EN 14604 and have the CE marking.
You must have at least one. (I'm not sure what room it should be in though if you do opt for only one)
Apparently insurance companies are going to enforce it by making you liable to a €5,000 excess of a claim if you don't have one or if it's not working.
*Be warned there are some scam artists going door to door telling you its obligatory that you have one, it is obligatory but DO NOT buy from them as some do not conform and you will be ripped off.
As there seems to be NOT a lot of posts on a good forum as far as I'm concerned .......
I'm going to bore you with my posts so if you get fed up ..... Just say ...... LOL !!!!!!!!!!!
OK here goes ...........
I suffer from Vasculitis an "autoimmune condition"
in and out of hospital since I've been here, six and a half years, lots of steroids and chemo but I'm still here
it ain't got me yet !!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have a wood burner and I think the the chimney needs sweeping. Does anyone know a good one who speaks English. We live in Montmorillon.
Many thanks.

Hi there
Could anyone tell me where I could get IBC's from (theses are the big plastic cubes, usually with an external metal cage used for transporting bulk liquids) and also wooden pallets, please ?
Hello , help needed please.
Does anyone know how you go about doing a change of address on a french driving licence. We went a bit too fast through the speed trap at Montmorillon today and I realized that it is probably a hanging offence not to have told the relevant authority of our change of address in September. Any ideas gratefully received.

Hello,
I am a newbie to the site, something you may have already gathered from the subject line, I along with the wife (the boss) have recently moved into the area and live just outside Le Dorat.
I will no doubt be popping up on the site from time to time to ask "where can we find this or that" or "how do you do such and such" as you will have a vastly superior knowledge of such things to us (which won't be difficult)
