Has anyone built their own house around this area?
We are thinking of a new build two bed bungalow and was wondering if anyone had done this. We have the land and could do most of the interior stuff including insulation, tiling, kitchen, bathroom, water, and electrics.
I'm just asking for peoples experience of self build, and a rough idea of costs for a 2 bed bungalow of footings, walls, roof, doors and windows ready for us to finish.

If you want to help promote Around Montmorillon Brian has kindly made us some business cards.
If you know Brian he does have some cards he could pass on to you, or send him a PM and see if you could meet up with him in a secret location.
For those of that don't know Brian he has also made up a PDF that you can download to your computer and print them off as and when you need them: Click here
*If you do use the business cards in you local shop, bar, etc please do not put them out without permission from the owner first.

This is a list off all Official French websites in English (*Note pages that lead off from the landing page may not be in English.) If you know of any more or find a mistake please post here and I will edit this post and remove your post to keep it neat.
France.fr is the multilingual reference portal for all the resources and services of the French public Internet.
Service-public.fr is the official website for the French civil service and a good gateway to the French civil service.
Conseil-etat.fr is a body of the French national government that acts both as legal adviser of the executive branch and as the supreme court for administrative justice.
NOTE: Although the links above are official websites, when dealing with the French authorities I would advise you to get a professional translation especially when dealing with legal matters.

Sorry folks it looks like the time has gone wonky on the forum, I've tried fixing it with a big hammer but no luck. It should come right at the next clock change but that's not till Sept.
So for now members can fix it by going to their User CP > On the left click "Edit Options" > Scroll down to Date and time options > Change to GMT + 1 if not already done > Then change the next box to "Always use DST correction" > Scroll down and save options.
If that doesn't' work set it back again and save then try again. If still no luck you have two more options.
#1 Wait till September to see if it fixes itself.
#2 Borrow my Hammer.

Very useful numbers listed above, one thing that a lot of people may not know about is the Pan-European number112. If your French is not up to it (and we often become tongue-tied in high pressure situations) this service will normally have an English (or other) speaking person on call.
If you have any further advice, feel free to add to this thread.

My wife is always on the lookout for English books but finding it a bit expensive buying second hand. I was saying why don't you try and swap them with others in the same boat instead of keep buying them?
So is anyone interested in setting up some sort of Book Swap? I'm not sure how we could go about it yet, but would like to know if anyone is interested?
So far I'm thinking maybe we could set up an opt in book member group and/or a new board in members only where you can say what books you have to swap. Obviously it won't work for just swapping one book, and we would have to be careful who and where you are meeting.
Shops and charities have to make money, and those ads can be posted in For Sale. But please no suggestions involving money in this thread as the idea is to save money.
Get your thinking caps on if you're interested and post your ideas here.

Banana's are on offer at the moment
3 Ripe Bananas.
2.5 Teaspoon Vanilla essence.
100g Brown Sugar.
1 Bottle of Eau de Vie or Vodka.
Mash the Bananas and put in a big enough Kilner jar with the Eau de Vie or Vodka, seal and leave in cool dark place for one week (Shake it each day)
After one week strain through a sieve into a clean jar, add sugar and mix till dissolved. Leave to settle for one day, then strain through Cheese Cloth into clean jar. add Vanilla Essence, seal the jar and leave for one more day.
Open the jar pour into shot glass, down in one. NO Maybe You Should Sip It
Change the above to your own taste. Longer you leave it the better it gets.

OK the title probably gave you a smile. But if you get a letter in French and you're not sure what it says, here is a handy little tip that may help.
Scan the letter and save as a PDF, JPEG, GIF or PNG file.
Go to your Google account, if you don't have one see Here!
Sign in and go to Google Drive.
Click the red arrow on the left next to "Create" and click "Files"
Find the letter you just scanned and saved and double click it.
A box should open make sure you tick "Convert text from PDF or image files to Google Docs documents"
Your upload will start.
Once it's uploaded you should see it under "My Drive"
Right click it > then "Open With" > Google Docs.
The letter should open in a new window.
Once it's loaded go to "Tools" in the menu bar and Click "Translate Document"
Choose English and click "Translate"
Another window will open and you will see the original letter. Scroll down and you will see a rough translated copy.
You can now print it off or go to "File" > "Download As" > Make your choice.
*Please Note: Google translate is not perfect and this tip is only intended to give you a rough idea of what your letter is about.
If your letter is important I would suggest you ask someone who speaks fluent French.
If you letter is a legal document I recommend you get a professional to translate it for you.
We have an old caravan, approx 18ft tip to tip. It's in a bit of a state, and was kindly left behind by the previous owners of our house.
Don't know for sure if its towable ,it could make a DIY project or be stripped for spares.
If anyone is interested or wants to come and have a look please send a private message.
We're located 10mins from Montmorillon and will be in town from 22 June.

Check your passport, I just noticed mine has only 3 months left.
You have two options to renew your passport, go back to the UK or send off to Paris. Below are the links to the Official Websites and instructions on how to apply.
If in the UK: https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport takes around 3 weeks and costs £72.50 or £81.25 through the Post Office’s Passport Check & Send service.
Tick the relevant box for Renew Red, Renew Black, First, Lost or stolen and click Next Step.
Tick Adult or Child and click Next Step.
Now you need to download and print off the PDF to pay by card, (just click the link on the page) print it off and fill it in. You can also pay by International Mandate but it will take longer.
Now scroll down and you will see “Follow the rules about passport photos” click it to read, it could save you time and money.
In the blue screen you will see three more links
#1 Smart application form: (This didn’t work for me, and I probably would use it for security reasons)
#2 Blank Application form: Download and Print it off to fill it in.
#3 Guidance notes: Make sure you read these.
Send your application, photographs and supporting documents, ideally by courier to.
Regional Passport Processing Centre
35 rue du Faubourg St Honoré
75383 Paris Cedex 08
France
Tips:
Right click the links and open in a new window.
Take a copy of all the forms and your old passport.
Check Check Check and Check it again before sending.
For people born on or before 2 September 1929 passports are free.
Use Black Ink.
*This information was taken from the above websites which was last updated 10 June 2013 if you know of any changes or have more info please post in this thread and I will update this post.

Hi everyone
I'm Steve, previously administrator of the old Around Montmorillon forum. I've come across here with the intention of continuing the good work previously provided on the old forum.
As I mentioned in the title, I'm a bit of a traveler - unfortunately not always for pleasure - we all have to make our dosh and to do this my skills take me to very sunny climes (nice, hot, but certainly not your tourist destinations).
Let's make the new Around Montmorillon site a place to be proud of.

Hello everyone I'm Fred. I have lived in France for 9 years now don't know where the time has gone, must be Age I didn't intend to live in France it just happened that way.
It all started in 2004, me, the wife, and the dog set off to tour Europe for a year with a 4x4 and a huge caravan, we had sold the house and the business and it was now time for the gap year we never had. First stop to chill out for a while was just north of Paris and decide where to go next. We had planned on heading east and maybe up to Russia, but not liking the north of France we decided to give it another go before moving on.
The map came out and over a few glasses of Merlot a pin ended up in Le Blanc. So off we went to give France another go, we got to Le Blanc but the camp site just didn't appeal so we continued till time was running out and we stopped on the campsite at Saint Savin for the night.
Well time to make this a bit shorter I think (don't want to bore you). Got carried away with time and as winter approached and the campsite was closing, we decided to rent. Move on in the Spring then shall we? Nope we liked the area and the people, so we purchased a house.
Never looked back, never got to Russia, but we are happy.
