Carte de séjour anyone ?

After reading about Nigel Lawson a leave campaigner for Brexit applying for a Carte de séjour in France I wondered if anyone else is thinking of doing the same ?

I have read some saying you don't need to apply yet and some saying you want to get it before March as it will save hassle after that date.

If you have applied or are going to could you post your experiences as it may help.

A Carte de Sejour might be a useful thing to have. I'm in the fortunate position of having 2 Irish grandparents so I'm going through the process of getting an Eire passport. The only difficulty is finding the birth certificate for the correct Johh O'Sullivan born between 1890 and 1895 - there are thousands of them!

I'm thinking of popping in to Motmorillon sous préfecture and asking their advice.

I have dual nationality as I’m half Irish. My dad was a Dubliner. I’m going to get my Irish passport soon too. My son got his Irish passport as soon as Brexit was mentioned. Luckily I had all my dad’s paperwork, birth certificates, original and copy, so that made life easier.

Lucky you, Jane. My dealings with the Irish government make me look forward to dealing with French bureaucracy!
And it seems there were something like 2500 John Sullivans in Cork/Limerick in the time period I'm searching.

Good luck withst Brian. Not an easy task at all. This is one of the reasons I haven’t pursued my family tree on my Irish side. I haven’t got the strength, as there are tons of them.

From what I read on the internet different prefectures are approaching this subject in a variety of ways, including not issuing them as we are still in the EU.  However, as I understand it, we are able to apply and have a carte de sejour issued.  I am unaware of whether Montmorillon can issue them or whether it's a trip to Poitiers.  My thinking is that I need to apply for a temporary one year carte de sejour initially and will be very interested in your 'battles' with the paperwork.  Please keep me/us informed.  When are you thinking of making a start?

Ok after a bit of research and a visit to the sous préfecture at Montmorillon I have found out what you need to do.

#1 You need to go to this website https://86.accueil-etrangers.gouv.fr/ and look at the section "Demande de titre de séjour"

#2 Then you need to follow the questions to find out what you need to make up your dossier.

#3 Once you have your photocopies and originals you then need to make an appointment at the sous préfecture in Montmorillon.

#4 They will run through it with you and take finger prints, if all is well they will send it off to Poitiers and let you know when your card has arrived at Montmorillon.

There is no obligation for UK citizens to have one as we are still in the EU, but some are saying it will make it easier to apply after Brexit. However there are some saying that it is a pointless exercise as we still don't know what will happen after Brexit and what we will be applying for.

At Chez Fred we have decided to go with the latter and not bother going for the Carte de Séjour before Brexit. I can see come the day after Brexit that the sous préfecture will say it's all a different system now and you have to go through a whole new process as your Carte de Séjour no longer applies to UK citizens.



Some of you may still think it is worth going for, so go to the website above and build you dossier. Once you have everything in place make an appointment at the sous préfecture, and they will go through it with you. *Don't bother turning up without your dossier as they will just point you to the website.

At the end of the day you still have to make your own decision as there is nothing written in stone on what we will need after Brexit.

No worries - we were on the subject together. I'll look at the dossier requirements - Montmorillon is a lot easier than Poitiers!
