Hello Steve, Beth, Nell the dog, and Dusty the cat welcome to Around Montmorillon. 
We ended up here in a similar way, we sold up and set off to tour Europe. However the winter came and we ended up renting near Montmorillon and we just fell in love with the area so purchased a house 17 years ago and never went any further.
You probably already know that "Camping Cars" Motorhomes can park up for free in most places in France. ?
