Yes, I think it might well be a pastime.
Our neighbours used to regularly prune or remove our trees without so much as a word, they proudly proclaimed that my Elder tree was dead when we first bought the house, well it would be after being sawn in half! On one occasion we arrived to find them having a bonfire, it was only when we went around the back we noticed we were a tree short and they were burning our tree remains!
I politely asked them to simply ask or tell us if a tree or shrub was bothing them so we could deal with it or agree they could and I've been in their bad books ever since!
