A Frenchman near us always burns his leaves in the garden so we had a big bonfire when he had his.
We kept it going about three days and no body said a word. If thy did we would have acted ignorant and said we were following our neighbours lead.
French laws are there, but it mostly depends on where you live on how many are followed. I would say the Brits follow them more than the French do themselves.
I wouldn't ask the Mayor as you could be letting yourself in for a lot of paperwork and conversation. I would respect how near you are to others and check the wind direction, but I wouldn't have one at the moment with all the fires going on you could be asking for trouble.
