Car registration in Montmorillon

Apologies if this has been covered before. I did go through the forum but couldn't find an answer.

I've just bought a used car and need to register it. I know the process in outline and where to do it. The vendor said that the fee has to be paid by cheque and cash is not acceptable. The problem is that I do not have a cheque book. Does anyone know if the fee can be paid by debit or credit card?

I had this for changing our address on our car at the préfecture in Montmorillon. The charge was €2:50 and although I had cash and a bank card with me, I had to go back with a cheque.

The only thing I can suggest is find someone with a cheque book and give them the cash, or see if you can get one from your bank or post office.

Not much help I'm afraid, but maybe someone else will have a better answer. If they wake up.
