Newbie from,England

Hi my name is Jim I live in England and was told this was a great area to live in. I don't know what I can contribute but I am known for having an opinion on most things.
You have great weather there I'm told and the scenery is also great although yours is not a wine growing region I'm tempted,to cross over and sample some wine and olives
I hope this is an active forum as I understand Fred is quote,prolific in his writings

Yes it is a great area to live in, especially if you like the countryside and the peace and quiet that goes with it. The weather is very good as there is a little micro climate that keeps the area mostly warm, though it can get a bit cold and fresh in the winter. Having said that the cold spells don't tend to last long and when the sun does come out on a cold day it soon warms up.

We have hardly any pollution or crime and the locals are very friendly, the scenery is beautiful and we have some very fine little French towns that are always worth a visit. No it's not a wine growing region, but you can sometimes sample some very nice local Pineau though I'm sorry it's not an olive region either. But don't let that put you off as most towns and villages have weekly markets with fresh produce and you will find many French delicacies available.

Not sure who told you I was prolific in my writings, you could be mistaking me for Admiral now he does have a way with words.

Jim it's not a hugely active forum as most members are usually resting in the sun sipping wine and munching on cheese, but there is usually someone about who will try and help. The new forum hasn't been going long, but we do have some nice friendly members and it is growing. As for what you can contribute just dive on in you don't have to live here to be part of Around Montmorillon, not all our members live here. Some have holiday homes, some use the fantastic camping facilities, some have just passed through, and some are just interested in the area.

Thanks Fred for the warm welcome, you paint a very idyllic picture of the region and I can well understand why you choose it to settle in .
The idea of sitting in the sun sipping wine and eating local cheeses really appeals to me ...... Yes you may be right perhaps it was admirals post I was reading and got confused. I think it was the avatar picture that I found amusing. I have a fondness for frogs and have several in my ponds.
I am looking in from afar and hope to be able to add to some of the discussions

Hiya Jim and welcome to the good ship Around Monty.

Can't really add much to what Fred has already written other than the food here - when you know where to look - is absolutely brilliant.

Get yourself out here and sample a fine Sunday lunch at Le Lucullus in the Hotel De France, an equally fine repas at La Voulzie on the banks of the river Gartempe whilst watching mad kayak-crazy youngsters trying to kill themselves over the rapids.

Don't worry about the area not being a wine producing region. There's vat loads of very good stuff in the local supermarkets and at the family run wine merchants down the road in Lathus.

I could go on and on - in fact I frequently do - but in short, welcome to the forum. Any questions, just post and someone will have the answer.

I'm very tempted to come over and see how nice it really is. I will make a note of the eateries you recommend and hopefully will descend on your area and partake of the local cuisine
It sounds fun watching the youngsters in the rapids, whilst enjoying a glass of wine.

Is the area famous for any specific food like Sausage? Or veal

Not specific to the area, but you will find them being sold in most supermarkets, traditional butchers, and on markets (the latter two being the better quality)

You will find a lot of Limousin beef and veal as we are not far from that region, I'm not a lover of veal myself I find the flavour a bit bland and I like my cow Red. But yes you will find it easy.

As for the sausage, don't confuse the two.
Saucisse is what you would probably know as a Sausage and it needs to be cooked.
A Saucisson is a dried/cured sausage you eat as it is and doesn't need cooking

I'm not keen on the French Saucisse as I like a good old banger so we make our own.

The Saucisson however are very nice and come in many different recipes, on the larger markets you will often find a stall selling nothing but Saucisson and you can usually sample before you buy.

Look out for the local Rillons (Pork belly very slowly cooked with herbs and spices) Yum Yum, they taste different depending where you get them as recipes vary. (again supermarket ones are not so good in my opinion).
