Having just got to France from a Covid-enforced 17 month absence, the garden looks like the Amazon rainforest.

Sooo......are we allowed a bonfire now that we're in October?  Or, if not, can we have a burn up in one of those metal incinerator thingy?

Things just haven't stopped growing this year...

Generally, garden bonfires are banned but the precise rules vary from commune to commune. Probably best to call into your mairie and ask.

As I understand it the whole of Nouvelle Aquitaine is a no-bonfire zone. Firstly the risk of a fire getting out of control and because dechetteries provide a green waste policy which allows you to take your said green waste there which in turn is turned into compost. I know some people do have bonfires but you run the risk of a fine if the boys in blue are involved. I could well be wrong but of course ask the Mairie of your commune.

I think you're right Clive - here's some information. Individual communes can allow fires under certain conditions subject to application and issuance of a permit.. Funnily enough, I bumped into one of our local (very helpful) Pompiers this week and she said that the fine for an illegal bonfire is 450€...

I'm sure you're right. I read somewhere recently that open fires outside AND in incinerator bin were no go in Nouvelle Aquitaine all year.
