Nightingales

I went out in the garden just before the last full moon and thought I recognised a nightingale singing in the next field. The following night, one took up residence in my back garden - but I was ready for it. I'd set up a microphone and a very long lead connected it to my computer inside the house. You can hear the results here.
If any of you are into slow radio or AMSR type sounds, you may find it useful...

The bird returned and could be heard every night for the next week. All has now gone quiet which means it's probably found a mate

We don't hear them here but at our old place he used to be at it all night long during the mating season. At first a bit annoying, but once you get used to it and the frogs and crickets it's nice.

How lovely to hear that. It's one of the things I really miss when we are not in France. I love sitting outside listening to all the different bird calls.

We are surrounded by Magpies where we live. At the moment I'm giving fresh water daily to a pair of wood pigeons. I absolutely love watching and listening to the birds. We really missed being there this year and being able to listen to the cuckoos and the woodpeckers, which are two species of birds that we don't have around where we live here in England. Well at least we don't hear them here.

You're very lucky Brian. Although we've been double vaccinated and apparently welcome to come to France without having to quarantine there, we're not so lucky on the return, as we would have to quarantine here. It all feels so uncertain at the moment. Looking at what has happened to all the people who were happily holidaying in Portugal, until that went on the amber list, I'm not sure even if they put France on the green list that we would feel comfortable, as things might just change at the drop of a hat.

BBC Radio 3 Breakfast have a feature called "sounds of the earth" in which they play a recording of natural sounds, intercut with music chosen by the presenter.

I submitted my nightingale recording to the station and they broadcast it this morning! In case anyone would like to hear it, professionally curated, as it were, it can be heard on BBC Sounds.

'My' bit starts just after 1 hour 16 minutes and continues to 1hr 32mins.
