Afternoon,

We are hoping to get our move to Montmorillon in motion for mid-late October.  Just wondered if anyone has any recommendations for a removal company in the NE of England that they have used for a move to France.

Also - any recommendations as to the best route over the Channel when travelling with dogs for stopping off / ferry v tunnel  etc

Thanks in advance

Jenny
Hi Jenny,

I can't help with a North East removal company other than suggesting getting three quotes, and seeing how you get on with whomever turns up.

For crossing the channel, the main alternatives down here are:

Channel tunnel
Turn up an hour in advance, the crossing takes 35 minutes and then you're pretty much straight onto the motorway. Your animals stay in the car with you. About 6hours 45 minutes driving time (plus any required stops)

Dover to Calais ferry
Crossing about 90 minutes- 2 hours. Pets stay in the vehicle as far as I know.

Newhaven-Dieppe ferry (DFDS)
The crossing takes 4 hours, dogs are put in kennels. I think you're allowed one accompanied visit to see your pets during the crossing. Driving time to Montmorillon about 5 hours

Portsmouth-Caen ferry (Brittany Ferries)
The longest crossing at about 6 hours. Your pets stay in your vehicle. Visit the information desk to arrange a visit during the crossing. Driving time to Montmorillon about 4 hours.

P&O runs ferries from Hull to Zeebrugge - might this be more convenient for you? No idea about pets on that route, I'm afraid.

We've taken our cats on the tunnel and Newhaven ferry route and prefer the ferry. It's less expensive than the tunnel and you do actually get a break from driving and sitting in your car.

I hope this helps...

Can't help with a removal company - we haven;t got to that stage yet.
We always travel via the tunnel with our dog. Although I am always looking at the ferry as an alternative. Usually the dog can't stay with you, but one route has a dog friendly cabin (can;t rember which now) - we just couldn't bear to leave him in the car or kennels!
The tunnel is so quick and has a great dog area at Folkestone, soon as we reach the other side we head for services approx 45 mins from Calais, Baie de Somme - it's lovely.
I can only echo that we travel back and forth several times a year to our place in La Trimouille, always bringing our dog with us, via the channel tunnel route. Never had any problems doing this and he gets to stay with us in the car for the relatively short journey through. We just couldn't leave him in the car alone on the ferry, so that's not an option for us at all. Good luck  Thumb
