Around Montmorillon

Anyone know what the rules are on incinerating garden waste in La Trimouille? Is incinerating allowed or not?

This is a really confusing and grey area because every department seems to do its own thing despite the fact that France did pass a law in 2011 banning garden bonfires all year round.

Here in the sleepy hamlet of La Trou we used to be banned from burning garden waste from June 15 to September 15.  Quite sensible if it was a hot summer.  Now rumour has it we are banned all year because there is access to a decheterrie so we have to take all garden waste there.  Quite impossible as we don't possess a trailer let alone a car with a tow bar.

But the rumour is just that - a rumour.  No one seems to know the right answer.

You could either do as our French neighbours do - burn garden waste whenever you fancy - or send a French-fluent, slim-hipped youth to ask at the Mairie.

Not much help I'm afraid but the Mairie is the only place to find out what the position is in La Trim.

I personally hate it when people incinerate back home as, depending on what they're burning, I find myself not able to breathe. However the idea was tempting at the moment as it is literally weeds, weeds and more weeds we have to get rid of. I suppose we'd best not chance it. Makes sense not to allow it during the hot Summer months. Did I say hot Summer?   Not quite sure where it's gone to at the moment, although it is more bearable for doing jobs.

A Frenchman near us always burns his leaves in the garden so we had a big bonfire when he had his.  



We kept it going about three days and no body said a word. If thy did we would have acted ignorant and said we were following our neighbours lead.

French laws are there, but it mostly depends on where you live on how many are followed. I would say the Brits follow them more than the French do themselves.

I wouldn't ask the Mayor as you could be letting yourself in for a lot of paperwork and conversation. I would respect how near you are to others and check the wind direction, but I wouldn't have one at the moment with all the fires going on you could be asking for trouble.

I think we would do the same as you Fred, if a neighbour lit one, but we'll be taking your advice and not bother at this time of year.

Just a thought. Depending on what waste it is, a lot of stuff can be composted or if it's largish branches etc you could stack it somewhere in the corner and create a little habitat for hedgehogs, lizards and things.

We accumulated a big heap over two years and a lot of it had rotted down and the rest burnt well because it had been drying all that time.

I don't mind housing hedgehogs and lizards, but knowing my luck it's become a snake's den
